Aswat Digital Services, the owner of Aswat Masriya, seeks to hire a full-time English Senior Editor to join its editorial and business-oriented team.

Aswat Digital Services (ADS) is bilingual website that provides news and analysis on governance, politics, daily events, gender and women’s issues, the economy, finance and business. It also covers news on arts, culture, sports, science, technology and other general interest topics. 

ADS is currently going through a period of changes while it implements a new business development plan to increase its audience base and revenue streams.

Job type: Contract (Full-time, from August  2016 until  March 2017, with possibility of extension)

Location: Cairo, Egypt

Salary: Attractive compensation package depending on experience

The position:

This role will be based at ADS’ offices in Cairo, Egypt and the successful candidate will lead the English team of Aswat Masriya’s website on a full-time basis. He/she will supervise a team of four junior editors and be responsible for producing high-quality materials for the English section of Aswat Masriya. He/she should be able to work in shifts according to work rota.

Key responsibilities:

The Senior Editor will bear responsibility for all content on Aswat Masriya English. This includes ensuring that all content is of a high editorial standard, selecting which parts of the Arabic content should be translated, producing original content in English, initiating new editorial partnerships and overseeing presence on social media (with the Social media team). 

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:         

-Managing four junior editors  

-Reviewing and editing English copy before publication

-Translating Aswat Masriya's content from Arabic to English

-Setting the editorial agenda for Aswat Masriya English, including making news judgments about which content is most relevant to English readers

-Providing context to articles to make them understandable to audiences outside Egypt

-Writing original stories about events in Egypt

-Uploading articles to the website using the CMS (training provided)

-Posting articles on Facebook and Twitter after uploading them to the website

-Contributing to the development of Aswat Digital Services as a company, including liaising with the Business Development team to generate revenues. 

Competencies sought 

-More than 10 years of experience in journalism (including newsroom experience)

-Native or near-native English language skills (essential)

-Experience in working in English-language media (essential)

-Professional editing skills

-Can-do attitude and willingness to roll up sleeves, get stuck in with work at all levels, from senior decisions to uploading articles to the CMS (essential).

-Experience in working in a digitally native start-up organisation (preferred)

-Management experience (preferred)

-Excellent written Arabic (preferred)
