Nobel Laureate and prominent opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei condemned torture on Wednesday after a satellite channel on Tuesday aired the testimony of a man who was allegedly tortured at the hands of police during clashes by the federal palace. 

“Sustained inhumane torture escalating in violation of all international conventions and legal norms. Back to dark ages of brutality,” said the former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency in a post on his official Twitter account on Wednesday. 

He also added in another statement in Arabic that the regime will suffer the consequences of losing its legitimacy as a result of brutality. 

“The people and world will not stand in silence,” he said, calling on Egypt's president to form a committee to investigate torture cases.

“(President Mohamed) Mursi must immediately establish an independent commission with full powers to investigate barbaric torture vs. detainees. Inaction is a crime.”
