CAIRO, Sept 18 (Aswat Masriya) – Egypt’s ambassador to Mexico Yasser Shaaban held meetings with Mexican Foreign Ministry officials to follow-up on the visit of Foreign Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu to Cairo, said Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.
The Mexican deputy foreign minister had summoned Shaaban and demanded compensation for the eight tourist killed and six wounded on Sunday in the western desert when an army helicopter gunship opened fire on them after mistaking them for militants, reported Mexican media outlets on Thursday.
The statement came after Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid had denied that Egypt received demands for compensation or that its ambassador to Mexico was summoned.
Massieu arrived in Cairo on Wednesday in the aftermath of the “accidental” killing of 12 Egyptians and Mexican tourists by security forces.
The Mexican Foreign Secretary met President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri during her visit.
Egypt vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the case, just as the Egyptian general prosecutor issued a publishing ban on the investigation until its conclusion.
The ban includes all media outlets and only allows the publishing of official statements issued by the prosecutor.
