CAIRO, Apr 14 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's Court of Cassation turned down on Tuesday a request for retrial by Islamist politician Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, upholding a seven-year prison sentence he received for forging documents.

Today's decision is final; it leaves no room for further appeals.

Abu Ismail, a former presidential hopeful, was sentenced to seven years in prison in April 2014 for forging his mother's nationality in the official papers submitted to the High Electoral Committee in the 2012 presidential elections. 

Abu Ismail, a lawyer and Islamist figure with a wide following, was disqualified from the presidential race after reports that his mother held a US passport.

Egypt's election law bans candidates who, themselves or their parents, carry any nationality other than Egyptian.

The Islamist preacher was arrested shortly after the military ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, following mass protests against his rule.

He was also sentenced to one year's hard labour on January 2014 for insulting the Egyptian judiciary and another year in prison in September the same year for insulting a police officer.
