CAIRO, Oct 11 (Aswat Masriya)- Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri is heading to New York Monday to participate in the United Nations General Assembly vote for non-permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council for the 2016-2017 term.
Egypt is running unopposed for the membership. Out of the five available seats at the UNSC, two are reserved for Africa, for which Egypt and Senegal are running.
The UNSC session will be held on October 15 to vote on the new members of the Security Council.
Ahead of the session, Shoukri will be addressing the ministerial session of the UNSC on women and peace on October 13. He is also set to meet with foreign counterparts on the side-lines of the UNSC session.
Egypt was elected as a non-permanent Security Council member in 1949-1950, 1961-1962, 1984-1985, and 1996-1997.
