More than 60 rights NGOs (non-governmental organizations) from around the world have asked national and political movements in Egypt to take responsibility for the reported cases of physical violence against women and put the issue on top of their priority list.
The NGOs insisted in a statement on Wednesday on their support for the demands raised by women’s rights movements in holding the authorities responsible for investigating the assaults and rape cases.
They also expect the authorities to bring perpetrators to justice and provide tools to support the victims and help them recover.
The statement pointed to the importance of providing medical and psychological support as well as legal and social services to the victims in accordance with the international law for human rights.
“Since the Jan. 25 revolution, female protesters have been exposed to the worst kind of violations and systematic physical violence to exclude them from public life and deprive them from the right to participate in political life or demand their rights," the statement said.
Reports by a movement that goes by the name “Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment” has said that 186 women were subjected to physical assaults between June 30 and July 7.
