Egypt army arrests Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis leader: Sources

Military forces arrested the leader of the military wing of the militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis in North Sinai on Friday, reported Ahram Arabic news website.

An official source said that Walid Attalah is suspected of orchestrating an RPG attack late Thursday in North Sinai, which killed three policemen and injured seven others.

"Walid Attalah received Egyptian citizenship during the era of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and he is of Palestinian origins," the source said.

Attalah is currently being questioned by security officials.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, a jihadist group based in Sinai, previously claimed responsibility for several attacks against Egypt's security forces after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, including an attempt in September, 2013 to assassinate the interior minister as well as several attacks targeting security headquarters and convoys.
