CAIRO, Jul 5 (Aswat Masriya) - Egyptian footballer Ahmed Marghany will not play in four upcoming games with local club Wadi Degla FC for "mixing politics and sports", the club announced on Sunday, state news agency MENA reported.
Marghany made critical remarks on the developments taking place in Sinai last Wednesday using his Facebook account.
Marghany's comments came on the same day in which Sinai-based Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis militant group conducted attacks on a number of security checkpoints and a police station in the town of Sheikh Zuweid, in a failed attempt to take over the town.
The attacks claimed the lives of 17 army personnel and injured 13, according to military figures.
The club administration asserted in its statement that it did not terminate its contract with Marghany, as had widely been reported over the past few days.
The club also said that Marghany "put himself in this position" and that he deliberately stirred controversy lately.
On the other hand, many have shown solidarity with Marghany, with a hashtag spreading on Twitter called "I support Marghany."
