Minya's criminal court on Thursday sentenced two alleged supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi to life in jail and seven others to 28 years on charges of attacking a police station during last summer's violent upheaval, Egypt's state-run TV reported.Five others were acquitted in the retrial.

The same court in April upheld death sentences for 37 defendants in the case and commuted the sentences of 492 others to life in prison for attacking a police station in Matay, resulting in the death of a police officer.

They were also charged with destroying public and private property, rioting, inciting violence and joining a banned group – a reference to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The Minya court also sentenced 11 defendants to 20 years in jail and acquitted two others in a retrial for their role in clashes in the town of Bani Mazar.

Police stations in Egypt came under attack last August after security forces violently cleared two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo, killing hundreds.
