CAIRO, Nov 29 (Aswat Masriya) – The General Prosecution summoned on Tuesday Doctors’ Syndicate’s deputy head Mona Mina, the syndicate announced.

The Doctors’ Syndicate said it received the summons which did not provide any further details, but said that Mina is to appear before the prosecution on December 3.

An outspoken advocate for doctors’ and patients’ rights, Mina was recently in the hot seat when she claimed that insufficient medical supplies at hospitals force some administrations to instruct doctors to use syringes and other supplies more than once.

On a phone in on a show on Al-Asema channel earlier this month, Mina said she received a plea for help from a doctor who said that the hospital administration gave them oral instructions to reuse medical supplies on patients.

“This includes syringes and IV drips for example,” Mina clarified, “if a patient needs two IV drips a day, [they’re told] to use only one, if a patient needs two syringes, they are to cover one and use it again.”

Her comments caused controversy, prompting the Health Ministry to announce that it would take legal action against the syndicate’s deputy head.

The ministry vehemently denied Mina’s claims, saying that it has sufficient stock of medical supplies to cover hospitals’ needs for two years.

“The ministry will take necessary legal procedures against the person responsible for spreading these false claims,” it announced at the time.

Following the uproar, Mina said that the focus on and “misrepresentation” of her statements are an attempt to distract from other “alarming facts” and problems she stated that need solutions.
