CAIRO, Nov 9 (Aswat Masriya) – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was the first world leader to phone Donald Trump to congratulate him on his electoral win on Wednesday morning, according to a statement by the presidency.
In the phone call, Sisi said he looks forward to strengthening Egypt-US ties on all fronts.
Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, after he passed the 270 Electoral College votes he needed to officially win the election.
Sisi expressed hope that Trump’s presidency would usher in a new era in Egypt-US relations that sees more cooperation in the interest of both the Egyptian and the American people, as well as fosters peace, stability and development in the Middle East despite the challenges the region faces.
“Egypt looks hopes that Trump’s presidency injects a new spirit into the path of Egyptian-American ties,” the statement read.
On his part, Trump expressed his appreciation for Sisi’s call, saying he is the first international leader to congratulate him on his win, the statement added.
Trump said he looks forward to meeting the Egyptian president soon, with Sisi extending an invitation to him to visit Egypt.
Sisi was among the first world leaders to congratulate the republican nominee, wishing him success “in looking after the American people’s interests who have entrusted him to lead them.”
The statement further congratulated the American people for successfully completing the elections.
In September, Sisi held a meeting with Trump, as well as Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly. Sisi’s meeting with Trump centered on countering terrorism, underlining the importance of working together in "defeating radical Islam."
In statements made to Fox Business, Trump praised the meeting, saying that there was “good chemistry” between them, adding that the meeting with Sisi was “productive.”
Trump described Sisi as a “fantastic guy who took control of Egypt" by taking a “tough approach” to whip out militants.
Sisi had also said in a CNN interview that he has “no doubt” the republican nominee would make a strong leader, and stressed that “there will be no chance for any dictatorship” in Egypt.
