CAIRO, Oct 15 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry headed a delegation on Saturday to Switzerland's Lausanne to attend a meeting on the Syrian crisis.
The ministry's spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that the minister received on Friday a phone call from US Secretary of State John Kerry inviting him to attend the meeting.
Kerry invited the Turkish, Saudi, Qatari and Jordanian foreign ministers as well, according to Reuters.
Egypt voted last Saturday on two resolution at the UN Security Council on Syria. The first resolution was backed by Russia and was strongly opposed by Saudi Arabia while the second was backed by France.
Both resolutions called for a ceasefire but Russia's resolution did not include ending of airstrikes on the Syrian city of Aleppo.
The Russian draft garnered only four votes while the French , which called for immediate end of air strikes on Aleppo, received 11 votes but was vetoed by Russia.
Saudia Arabia criticised the Egyptian vote on the Russian resolution and described Egypt's stance as "painful".
On Thursday, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that Egypt adopts an “independent” policy on Syria and stressed the importance of a political solution to the crisis.
