CAIRO, Sept 18 (Aswat Masriya) - A Cairo court ordered on Sunday the release of political activist Zizo Abdo after he spent more than four months in detention, according to lawyer Mokhtar Mounir.
Abdo was arrested on May 5 on accusations of plotting to overthrow the government, inciting unlicensed protests and belonging to an outlawed group. His detention has been renewed since then.
The April 6 Youth Movement member was among dozens of activists who have been detained in the wake of April 25 protests against the Egyptian-Saudi maritime border demarcation agreement, which stipulates that two strategic islands, Tiran and Sanafir, fall within Saudi territorial waters.
Despite his release, Abdo will have to visit the Boulaq al-Dakrour police station three times a week from 6 pm to 10 pm over the period of 45 days due to precautionary measures placed on him by the prosecutor.
Mounir said that Abdo's case included a total of nine defendants, in which six of them have been previously released. After the release of Abdo, only two remain; Haitham Mohamedain and Hamdy Qeshta.
“Haitham Mohamedein’s detention was renewed for 45 days a while ago, while the detention of Hamdy Qeshta was extended for 15 days,” Mounir told Aswat Masriya.
“All defendants should be released as they are detained in the same case, facing same charges, so the same procedures should be taken,” he added.
Meanwhile, Qasr El-Nil court upheld the decision to release 52 defendants, who were arrested during the April 25 protests, rejecting the prosecution's appeal against their release.
Last June, the administrative court annulled the border demarcation agreement and affirmed that the two islands fall within Egypt's borders, but the State Lawsuits authority, the body representing the government in legal cases, appealed the verdict before the Supreme Administrative Court and Supreme Constitutional Court.
