Prosecution orders arrest of Ayyat train driver after deadly accident

CAIRO, Sept. 7 (Aswat Masriya) - At least four people were killed, and over 20 others injured in a train accident in al-Ayyat in Giza on Wednesday.

CAIRO, Sept 8 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's public prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered on Thursday the arrest of the driver of the train that crashed in al-Ayyat, Giza and left five people killed a day earlier.

At least 25 others were also injured in the crash.

The driver was charged with the "murder and attempted murder" of 35 citizens.

Egypt is among the countries with the highest rates of road accidents in the world. According to official statistics, the economic cost of traffic accidents in 2015 was estimated at EGP 30.2 billion with the number of accidents reaching 14,500.

Critics have often called out the government for arresting drivers instead of putting more attention on renovating and reforming infrastructure.
