CAIRO, Aug 2 (Aswat Masriya) – Three conscripts and five civilians were injured in a shooting targeting a police vehicle in the district of Nahya in Giza, Egypt’s interior ministry said on Tuesday.
The police vehicle, which was carrying a number of conscripts, was attacked Tuesday morning on the 26 July corridor by unidentified assailants.
The police opened fire on the perpetrators, prompting them to escape, the interior ministry said in a statement.
The injured civilians were riding a bus which happened to pass by at the time of the incident, said the ministry.
A security source at the Giza security directorate told Aswat Masriya earlier today that two conscripts were injured after masked armed men opened fire on the police vehicle.
Militancy inside Egypt has seen a significant rise since the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, following mass protests against his rule.
While the deadliest attacks take place in the restive Sinai peninsula, militants have targeted security forces and planted bombs in Cairo and other cities.
