CAIRO, Jul 9 (Aswat Masriya) - The Shubra al-Kheima criminal court will hand down on Sept 5 its verdict on former head of Qalyubia security directorate and three of his aides over charges of killing protesters during 2011 Uprising.

The court acquitted the defendants in September 2012 but Egypt's highest court, the Court of Cassation cancelled the verdict and ordered a retrial.

In January 2011, thousands of people took to the streets in anti-government protests across Egypt calling for the fall of the regime.

Hundreds of protesters were killed during the 18-day protests, which ended the 30-year rule of former president Hosni Mubarak.

Police brutality was one of the main triggers of the Uprising, sparked by protests on Police Day in Egypt aimed to draw attention to the police's use of excessive, at times fatal, force.
