CAIRO, Apr. 22 (Aswat Masriya) – Two conscripts and one officer were injured Friday morning after a bomb exploded in Northern Sinai’s Arish, security sources said.
The sources told the state-owned MENA that anonymous people planted a bomb on one of Arish’s main roads, which led to the explosion of a police car and the injury of three men.
The injured were transferred to a hospital for treatment.
The attack comes days ahead of protests planned to coincide with Sinai National Liberation say on Apr. 25, against Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s handing over sovereignty on the two Red Sea islands Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia, a move which triggered mass protests and criticism of the president.
Militancy inside Egypt has seen a significant rise since the military ouster of then-President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, following mass protests against his rule.
North Sinai is at the epicenter of militant insurgency as most attacks take place there, targeting security forces.
According to separate statements by the armed forces, Egyptian security forces have killed hundreds of militants in Sinai over the past two years.
The Islamic State-affiliate known as the Sinai Province has frequently claimed responsibility for attacks occurring in the Sinai Peninsula.
