CAIRO, Feb. 17 (Aswat Masriya) – An ISIS-affiliated group in Egypt claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack in Giza that left one police officer dead and two others injured.
In a statement published on social media, the group claimed that the attack left "three police personnel dead including a policeman and at least five others injured."
Aswat Masriya couldn't independently verify the authenticity of this statement.
A drive-by shooting targeted security forces stationed in the area of Badrashein in the Giza Province on Tuesday night, according to the interior ministry's statement.
Immediately following the incident, security forces surveyed the area in search of the suspects and imposed security checkpoints, the statement added.
The injured police officers were transferred to the hospital for treatment, a security source told Aswat Masriya on Tuesday.
The security checkpoint in Badrashein had witnessed several attacks during the past months.
In a similar attack in Giza in November, the interior ministry said that two masked men on a motorcycle opened fire on a police car located in the district of Aboul Nomros, leaving four policemen dead.
The ISIS-affiliated group in Egypt had claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement published on social media on the same day.
The group is mostly active in North Sinai where an insurgency has been escalating since the military ouster of then-President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, after protests against his rule.
Bombings and shootings are not as frequent in Cairo, but the group has claimed a number of operations targeting vital facilities and security personnel.
