CAIRO, Apr 7 (Aswat Masriya) – Egyptian and Italian investigators met Thursday in Rome to discuss developments in the murder case of Italian student Giulio Regeni, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

The Egyptian delegation, which arrived to Rome on Wednesday, includes Deputy Public Prosecutor Mostafa Soliman, International Cooperation Prosecutor Mohamed Hamdi el-Sayed, National Security General Adel Gaafar and two high-ranking police officials named as Alaa Abdel Megid and Mostafa Meabed, ANSA added.

The Italian side is represented by Rome Prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone.

Egypt's delegation reportedly presented a 2000-page case report that includes testimonies of 200 witnesses with alleged connections to the victim, ANSA said.

Italy said on Tuesday it would take "immediate and proportionate" measures against Egypt if the Cairo government did not fully cooperate in uncovering the truth over the murder of Regeni.

The 28-year-old Italian researcher, Giulio Regeni, went missing in Cairo on Jan. 25, 2016, which marked the fifth anniversary of the popular uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.

Ten days later, Regeni's body was found, bearing signs of torture, in a roadside ditch on the outskirts of Cairo.

Though it is not yet clear who was behind Regeni's murder, eyes were directed towards Egypt's interior ministry as being involved in his torture and death.

The interior ministry denied, however, any responsibility for the incident.

On Mar. 25, the interior ministry said that it killed gang members in a shootout who may have a link to Regeni's murder.

The police allegedly found Regeni's personal belongings in the apartment of a gang member's relative, said a statement by the ministry then.

However, Italy dismissed the Egyptian police's narrative, demanding further cooperation from the Egyptian side to uncover the truth behind Regeni's murder.
