CAIRO, Oct. 26 (Aswat Masriya) - Prime Minister Sherif Ismail accepted the resignation of the governor of Alexandria Hani el-Messiry late Sunday.
Messiry stepped down in the aftermath of a weather crisis which left five people dead, four of them electrocuted when heavy rainfall flooded the coastal city and power cables hit the resulting pools of water where people were stranded. The fifth victim had drowned, trapped in his sunken car.
Ismail assigned Alexandria's deputy governor to take step in to temporarily replace Messiry.
Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Wali disbursed EGP 10,000 for the families of the five victims, just as Ismail announced the allocation of of EGP 75 million to repair the damage caused by the heavy rainfall in the Mediterranean city, Egypt's second largest metropolis.
No stranger to heavy rain, Alexandria's unusual flooding was likely caused by a clogged drainage system, in what has been described by citizens commenting on the scenes of total chaos, as a classic case of official negligence.
President Abdel Fattah called for an urgent meeting with the cabinet Monday morning.
The heavy rainfall has affected other provinces across Egypt, including Aswan, causing traffic congestion and power cuts. Navigation was also obstructed in the sea ports in Kafr el-Sheikh, Rashid and Ain Sokhna because of the bad weather conditions.
