In a speech that is to be given in front of an elders committee in New York, U.S Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton says that “women have been marginalized in the electoral process towards the aimed democracy in Egypt, including the latest legislative elections.”
According to al-Masry al-Yom, Clinton believes that “women have been marginalized in the transitional process towards the aimed democracy in Egypt, including the latest legislative elections.”
Clinton adds: “Women have been excluded to a large extent from the transitional process, and have been subject to harassment on the streets.” She also states that “the best organized parties have supported a small number of women candidates in the latest elections.” Clinton considers” such partisan stances towards women’s rights to be ambiguous in the best cases, and they have to admit that the Egyptian revolution won by the efforts of men and women together and that their democracy will succeed by the efforts of men and women together.”
It is noteworthy that in the last parliament of Mubarak’s regime at a law was passed to assign a quota for women in the People’s Assembly. The law was however annulled by SCAF after the Mubarak regime was toppled.
