CAIRO, Dec. 19 (Aswat Masriya) - Cairo criminal court ordered Saturday the release of student and amateur photographer Israa al-Taweel because of her health conditions.
Taweel was accused of "belonging to a terrorist organisation" and calling for disrupting laws, preventing state institutions from operating, assault on personal freedom and "harming national unity" by spreading false news.
She was arrested on June 1 and was denied proper care for a debilitating bullet wound she ironically acquired while covering protests marking the third anniversary of the January 2011 uprising. During her recovery, she has had to use a wheelchair for months.
Local and International Human rights organisations have reiterated the call for action in Taweel's case.
According to a November report by Amnesty International, Egyptian authorities were "preventing" Taweel from receiving the required medical care that could prevent her from becoming permenantly disabled.
