Dozens of State Radio and Television Union employees staged protests on Sunday outside the Maspiro building (State TV building) to demand sacking information minister Salah Abdel Maqsoud.
The protesters said that the minister’s position is unconstitutional, as the radio and television are independent from the ministry according to the constitution’s text.
“The information minister committed the deliberate mistake of favoring the government to being professional in delivering information to Egyptians,” said a statement issued by the Maspiro workers.
The statement described the minister’s mistakes as a “betrayal to Egypt and its people.”
The protesters also demanded the dismissal of all government officials who are complying with the information minister's policies.
“The information ministry’s “Cabinet committee” had approved a new regulation that reduces the workers’ salaries by more than 60 percent, which causes serious damages to us,” said the statement.
The protesters accused the information minister, who is a Muslim Brotherhood member, of working for the Islamist group's benefit.
The statement added that Maspiro had suffered a drop in its professionalism since the appointment of Abdel Maqsoud in office, saying that all guests of all the television programs represent only a particular current (Egypt’s ruling Muslim Brotherhood).
The statement called on everyone to work on having the media represent all of Egypt and not just the ruling regime.
