Daqahlyia, Nov. 16 (Aswat Masriya) - Two unidentified gunmen opened fire Monday on a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary, Ashraf Nagi al-Adrosy, in the city of Daqahliya, north of Cairo. 

Adrosy was on his way home after a day of election campaigning in the village of Derb in Daqahliya. 

Eye witness Hamid Sobeih told Aswat Masriya "we were stopped by two masked men, one of them carrying a gun, on our way back to the village of Meet Sweid."

Sobeih said that when he found that Adrosy was shot, he drove him to the nearest hospital.

He added that Adrosy sustained injuries in his shoulder and is expected to leave the hospital by Tuesday. 

Adrosy's supporters told Aswat Masriya that they suspected that a rival candidate was behind the attack, adding that they had threatened to shoot him two days ago.

Adrosy filed a police complaint, he told Aswat Masriya, without naming any suspects. He said that the attack aimed to force him to withdraw from the elections race, but that he will continue his "journey."

The elections to choose Egypt's House of Representatives are underway, with the second phase scheduled for Nov. 22-23 across 13 provinces including Cairo and Daqahliya.

The first phase covered 14 provinces including Giza and was marked by a low turnout in its first and second rounds with an overall turnout rate of about 26.69 percent.
